Public Open House

Entry is by RSVP only and limited to 100 visitors. The website for registration is

Following an immense increase in visitation to the Big Sur coast, the Big Creek Open House event has become so popular that we need to limit the number of entries. This is necessary for a number of reasons including: managing impact to traffic on the highway, limitations on parking along the highway, the reserve staff’s ability to receive overwhelming numbers of visitors, the quality of the educational experience that our mission requires us to teach visitors, and impacts to the research and natural resources of the reserve. Open House is the only day of the year that the Reserve is open to unguided public visitation. You are welcome to visit, learn what we do, meet the staff, and explore the Reserve. We'll have folks at the main entrance who can share their experience and knowledge with you about lots of topics. Please also see our option of docent-led tours below.

Docent Tours

Stay tuned, starting in May, 2018

Docent-led visits will be advertised via the Landels-Hill Big Creek Reserve website and filled via electronic reservation open to the general public. All reservations will need to be completed at least one week prior to tour dates. Visits will be limited to 12 people and will be best suited for adults and children over 10 years of age. While every effort will be made to complete reserved visits, they may be cancelled by the reserve staff due to environmental conditions and or safety concerns, or if fewer than 5 people sign up one week prior. If there are less participants than required then the participants registered from that month will be moved to the next month and all other participants will be shifted to later dates in the order of their registration time. Visitors entering Landels-Hill Big Creek will be required to sign a waiver of liability and adhere to the UCNRS reserve use guidelines (e.g. no pets, UC no smoking policy, etc.).
