Open House, 2017
Entry is by RSVP only. A website for registration will be available one month before the date of the event.
IMPORTANT NOTE TO VISITORS: Due to a bridge replacement in Big Sur, access to Big Creek Reserve will only be possible from the south for the remainder of the year.
Open House is the only day of the year that the Reserve is open to unguided public visitation. You are welcome to visit, learn what we do, meet the staff, and explore the Reserve. We'll have folks at the main entrance who can share their experience and knowledge with you about lots of topics. Bring hiking shoes and a sack lunch. Driving tours are not available. Parking is limited to the pullout just south of the reserve gates. Park on the highway pullout and walk down to the gatehouse from there. Watch for signs out on the highway. Please carpool if possible. Click here for driving directions.
Following the trend of an immense increase in visitation to the Big Sur coast, the Big Creek Open House event has become so popular that we need to limit the number of entries. We need to do this for a number of reasons including: managing impact to traffic on the highway, limitations on parking along the highway, the reserve staff’s ability to receive overwhelming numbers of visitors, the quality of the educational experience that our mission requires us to teach visitors, and impacts to the research and natural resources of the reserve. We are working toward other ways to share Big Creek Reserve with the public in the future.
Thank you for your understanding.
